Washoe County Sheriff's Office detectives continue to lead the regional investigation of an officer involved shooting that occurred Saturday night during a police response to shots fired in downtown Reno.

As previously reported by the Reno Police Department, officers initially responded to the area of the 100 block of West Street at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2020 on a report of shots fired, and an officer involved shooting occurred.

Washoe County Sheriff's Office detectives are providing more details for this incident in the hopes any witnesses will come forward.

That night Reno Police Officers responded to multiple 911 calls of a man walking down West Street, firing shots. As this area is outside of a night club, there were a number of people fleeing, hiding and in fear of their lives. Witnesses told police officers that the suspect went inside a hotel on West Street. Due to the circumstances officers from the Reno Police Department started searching inside the hotel where they came in contact with the suspect, 20-year-old Justus Aceves, and an officer involved shooting occurred.

Aceves was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Aceves is booked on two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and a single count of discharging a weapon where a person might be endangered, which is a gross misdemeanor. These charges are specific to his actions on West Street. A booking photo is not yet available.

No other civilians or officers were injured in this incident.

As part of the Washoe County Regional Officer Involved Shooting Protocol, the Sheriff's Office is working with investigators from the Sparks Police Department, Reno Police Department, and the Washoe County District Attorney's Office. Once completed, the investigation will be forwarded to the District Attorney for his review.

Detectives are actively seeking anyone with information, pictures or video footage regarding this case. Witnesses are asked to call the Washoe County Sheriff's Office at (775) 328-3320 or Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900.
