Sheriff's Office

Persons Unit

The Crimes Against Persons Unit is comprised of specialized detectives dedicated to investigating serious and often complex crimes impacting the safety and well-being of the members of our community. The division includes detectives assigned to Crimes Against Persons, Crimes Against Children, and the Domestic Violence Unit, as well as a dedicated Victim Advocate who provides support and resources to victims and their families throughout the investigative process.

Crimes Against Persons

Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Persons Unit investigate major felony offenses including homicide, robbery, kidnapping, elder abuse, neglect, exploitation, and other violent crimes. Detectives manage all aspects of investigations, working closely with prosecutors, forensic investigators, laboratory personnel, and partner law enforcement agencies to pursue thorough and professional case resolution.

Crimes Against Children

Within the division, highly trained detectives specializing in Crimes Against Children investigate offenses involving juvenile victims throughout the unincorporated areas of Washoe County. These investigations include sexual abuse, physical abuse, missing or abducted children, runaway juveniles, and other crimes that place children at risk. These detectives work collaboratively with local and regional law enforcement agencies, school systems, child advocacy organizations, community service providers, and national partners such as the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to help protect children, support families, and promote the safety and well-being of our community’s youth.

Domestic Violence Unit

The Domestic Violence Unit investigates felony-level domestic violence incidents and related crimes involving intimate partners and family violence. Detectives assigned to this unit work closely with patrol deputies, prosecutors, victim service providers, medical personnel, and community advocacy organizations to investigate cases, support victim safety, and hold offenders accountable. These investigations often involve repeat offenders, strangulation, stalking, violations of protective orders, and other high-risk situations requiring specialized training and victim-centered approaches.

Victim Advocate

The division’s Victim Advocate works directly with victims, witnesses, and surviving family members to provide updates, connect individuals with resources, and help ensure their needs are not overlooked during what are often traumatic and difficult circumstances.
