Washoe County Sheriff Balaam hosts promotion ceremony on Monday

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam will promote a new lieutenant and four new sergeants during a ceremony Monday afternoon at the Sheriff's Office.

The promotion ceremony is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 10, in the staff dining hall at the Sheriff's Office, 911 Parr Boulevard. Sergeant Frank Eubanks will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and deputies Dan Bales, Peter Michel, Martin Obos, and Levi Smith will receive their sergeant stripes.

Frank Eubanks began his law enforcement career at the Lovelock Police Department and was hired by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office in October of 1996. While a deputy in the Detention Bureau, Eubanks was a member of the Detention Response Team, Rangemaster, Field Training Officer, and an instructor in various areas of defense. He moved to Patrol in 2004 where he served time as a member of SWAT, the Major Accident Investigation Team, and as a Field Training Officer. Eubanks was promoted to Sergeant in 2015 and has continued to serve on various teams and as a training officer. Eubanks was awarded the Bronze Star in 2011 for his role in a SWAT incident in Sun Valley.

Dan Bales was hired by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office in January 2005. He has served in the Detention Bureau, on Court Transport, and Patrol. He has worked in the agency's Training Section as Rangemaster for the past seven years. He is also a member of SWAT.

Peter Michel has been with the Sheriff's Office since March of 2000. He has been a member of the Inmate Management Unit, Hostage Negotiation Team, and Peer Support Unit. He is trained as a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) and is a Field Training Officer. Deputy Michel also initiated the idea to bring music therapy to the Detention Facility's Mental Health Unit.

Martin Obos was also hired in March of 2000. While a Detention Deputy, he served on the Detention Response Team and as a Field Training Officer. He served on Patrol for ten years during most of which he was a member of SWAT and a Field Training Officer. He has served for the past three years in the Civil Unit. He has been awarded the Bronze Star three times during his career for various acts of bravery.

Levi Smith was hired by the Sheriff's Office in January 2005. He has served in both Detention and Patrol. While in Patrol, he has been a member of SWAT, and emergency vehicle driving instructor, a DUI instructor, and a Field Training Officer. He was awarded the Bronze Star in 2018 for his part in the Montage shooting incident in downtown Reno.
