Washoe County Sheriff's Office detectives continue to lead the regional investigation of an officer involved shooting that occurred late Sunday night on Abbay Way in Sparks.

As previously reported by the Sparks Police Department, officers initially responded to the 400 block of Abbay Way at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28 on a report of an intoxicated suicidal subject. Officers arrived on the scene and made contact with the subject. After further investigation, it was determined that the subject was not suicidal, did not meet the criteria for a legal hold, and that no crime had been committed.

Officers were called back to the scene at approximately 7:00 p.m. on the report of a possible domestic battery that had just occurred involving the same subject. This time the subject refused to cooperate with officers and barricaded himself within his residence.

Officers had been attempting to negotiate with the subject for approximately one hour when the subject came out of the house armed with a rifle. The situation then escalated resulting in the officer involved shooting.

Officers immediately started lifesaving measures along with REMSA paramedics. The subject was pronounced deceased by medical staff at the scene.

No other civilians or officers were injured in this incident.

Earlier today, the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the identity of the decedent as Jose Dominguez, age 47, of Sparks. Next of kin have been notified.

The Washoe County Regional Officer Involved Shooting Protocol has been activated. The Sheriff's Office is the lead agency for this investigation, working with investigators from the Reno Police Department, and the Washoe county District Attorney's Office. Once completed, the investigation will be forwarded to the District Attorney for his review.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call the Washoe County Sheriff's Office at (775) 328-3320 or Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900.
