In a major change in policy, Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam announced Wednesday, July 15, 2020 that his Office will release the Body Worn Camera (BWC) footage and initial details, as they are known, within 14 days of one of his commissioned personnel being involved in an officer involved shooting.

"We are community listeners and community protectors, in that order," said Sheriff Balaam. "The conversations that have occurred in the past month and a half have not fallen on deaf ears. I hear the concerns of our residents, and it is my responsibility to mirror the needs of the community while keeping everyone safe."

The rewritten policy 310.5.6 can be found within the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Policy Manual on the homepage of the Office's website washoesheriff.com (pages 76-80). It outlines the immediate and successive stream of information, both internally and externally, of an officer involved shooting. The newly adopted policy also provides framework for making the deceased's family a priority in the information stream.

Sheriff Darin Balaam is available for interviews on July 15, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
