Arrest made in Sun Valley shooting

In a collaborative investigation between teams with Washoe County Sheriff's Office and the Regional Gang Unit, a 24-year-old Sun Valley resident man is arrested and charged with a gang-related shooting.

On Thursday, January 17, 2013, at approximately 1:18 a.m., Washoe County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to Renown Regional Medical Center on a reported person being treated with a single gunshot wound later determined to be non life-threatening.

Upon arrival, Deputies contacted an undisclosed 32-year-old male. Sheriff's deputies conducted a preliminary investigation and learned the male had been shot while in the area of the Sierra Pointe Apartment complex, located at 4400 El Rancho Drive in Sparks.

Sheriff's Deputies followed up in the area of the Sierra Pointe Apartments and contacted witnesses to the events. Witnesses provided information on the whereabouts of the shooting and there deputies located a spent shell casing. Based on the preliminary information gathered at the hospital and the scene, the incident was believed to be gang-related. Washoe County Detectives as well as the Regional Gang Unit were called to continue the investigation.

On Friday, January 18, the Regional Gang Unit identified the shooting suspect as Juan Manuel Sanchez, a 24-year-old Sun Valley resident. At approximately 11:20 p.m., Sheriff's patrol, detectives, K-9 Teams and members of the Regional Gang Unit located and arrested Sanchez at the intersection of East 8th Avenue and Yukon Drive in Sun Valley without incident. Sanchez was booked at the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility on one count of Battery with a Deadly Weapon in the Promotion of a Criminal Gang and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. His bail is set at $60,000.
