Washoe County Sheriff's Office Detectives investigating the suspect in a series of vehicle thefts and vehicle burglaries that occurred earlier this year say the suspect specifically targeted unlocked vehicles.

Ashton Spohn, age 21, of Sparks was arrested in in July of this year after Reno Police Department Officers spotted him driving a stolen vehicle in the area of US 395 and Oddie Boulevard. At the time, the Sheriff's Office was looking for Spohn as the suspect in a vehicle burglary which occurred in the area of Sun Valley Boulevard and Second Avenue earlier that month, as well as at least one stolen vehicle case.

Following his arrest, detectives from both the Sheriff's Office and the Reno Police Department continued their investigation, identifying Spohn as the suspect in approximately half a dozen vehicle thefts and at least two dozen vehicle burglaries. The thefts took place throughout the region. In all these cases, Spohn looked for unlocked vehicles.

Sheriff's Office detectives say this case is a strong reminder to residents that criminals like Spohn are looking for opportunities such as unlocked vehicles. Taking preventative safety measures may help mitigate your chances of becoming a victim.

Steps residents may take to protect their vehicles and valuables include:

  • Lock your Doors!
  • Do not leave items in plain view in your vehicle.
  • If parking outside, remove your garage door opener from your vehicle.
  • If parking in the driveway, leave your outdoor lights on.
  • Do not leave residential keys ‘hidden' in your yard.
  • Don't leave your vehicle warming up in the driveway unattended.
  • Report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood.

The Sheriff's Office "Take ConTRoL" crime prevention campaign is another way for residents to easily remember four key messages that help prevent vehicle burglaries:

C - Clean it Out: remove valuables from your vehicle

T - Take your keys with you. Never leave your car running

R - Report suspicious activity or crimes to the proper authorities as soon as possible

L - Lock your doors every time
