Reno, NV: As a convenience for the public, a new service offered by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office has streamlined the process of obtaining traffic accident reports. The Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Carfax Police Crash Assistance Program, is now offering accident reports online.

Through the use of technology, residents are now able to quickly and conveniently obtain a copy of their traffic accident reports from any internet accessible computer. The reports are stored electronically in a highly secure database and available for purchase through Carfax at www.washoesheriff.com.

Individuals involved in a traffic accident are given a unique case number by the deputy at the scene. This case number, along with the date of the accident will be needed to access the report, which is generally available within three to five days of the accident. Carfax charges a $5 fee to provide access to residents so they can view, save, print and email their accident report.

This new online service also provides added convenience for the public to quickly send the reports to insurance companies without the expense of time and travel needed when driving to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office recently announced it was necessary to discontinue front desk service on the weekends due to the impact of additional budget reductions mandated by the Washoe County Board of Commissioners.

"The Sheriff's Office continues to evaluate and reallocate public services in order to meet current budget reductions set by the Board of County Commissioners," Assistant Sheriff Tim Kuzanek said. "Creating partnerships with organizations such as Carfax help provide solutions in our effort to create efficiencies that balance those reductions and benefit the public."
