The Washoe County Sheriff's Office and other Nevada law enforcement agencies are making plans to help keep the Nevada Day Weekend safe and make this a safe and joyous holiday season on our state's roads and highways by emphasizing the dangers of driving under the influence.

For drivers, Nevada Day and holiday plans should include arrangements that ensure no one will be driving under the influence. Whether it's a designated driver or public transportation, everyone should make sure they have an alternative that avoids the possibility of making a bad decision that could lead to unnecessary tragedy.

To help bring greater awareness to the importance of safe and sober driving during the holidays, the Sheriff's Office plans to participate in two Joining Forces DUI enforcement campaigns in the coming months.

The first campaign includes the Nevada Day weekend. The event begins this coming Friday, October 19, and ends on November 4. During this time, the Sheriff's Office, Reno and Sparks Police Departments, and the Nevada Highway Patrol will dedicate extra officers to DUI enforcement with the aim of reducing tragedies caused by people driving under the influence.

A similar campaign is scheduled from December 18, 2018, through January 1, 2019 to include Christmas and New Years.

Funding for the extra patrols needed for this campaign is made possible by a Joining Forces grant received from the Nevada Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety.

Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program aimed at reducing injuries and crashes through statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, speed, distracted driving, seat belt and pedestrian safety.

The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.
