Hunting seasons for Dove, Grouse and Crow will open in Washoe County on September 1 and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office reminds hunters, and others who recreate in the outdoors, about county ordinances governing the discharge of firearms and recent changes to the county's "congested area" boundaries.

Maps showing the updated boundaries, along with information and maps highlighting congested and restricted areas, can be found on the Washoe County Sheriff's Office website at WashoeSheriff.com. Enter "congested area" in the Search window.

Everyone who plans to recreate in these areas should familiarize themselves with these restrictions and maintain awareness of activity taking place in their surroundings while in the outdoors. An informational brochure prepared by the Sheriff's Office is available by following this link: http://www.washoesheriff.com/resources/files/congested_shooting.pdf

The men and women of the Sheriff's Office take residents' safety seriously and will issue citations to anyone found discharging a firearm within the prohibited areas and to anyone found discharging firearms other than shotguns or air guns in the restricted areas.

Wildland fire danger is very high this time of year and the Sheriff's Office also reminds all hunters and shooters that a small spark can quickly lead to a large fire. A list of tips for shooting responsibly and reducing wildfire risk is attached to this press release.

Residents with concerns about activity that may be illegal or dangerous should immediately call the Sheriff's Office at (775) 785-WCSO (9276).
