The Washoe County Sheriff's Office contacted the Sparks Police Department on Friday, August 5, 2016 to request that Sparks investigate an incident that occurred in the Washoe County Detention Facility the night before. The incident resulted in the hospitalization of an inmate in a potentially life-threatening condition.

The subject was initially arrested by the Reno Police Department on August 3, for misdemeanor charges. The subject was treated and cleared at Renown prior to being transported to the Detention Facility.

Approximately 24 hours later, the subject was taken back to Renown by REMSA due to erratic behavior. The subject was cleared by Renown again and was returning to the Detention Facility when another incident occurred. During this incident, the subject became unresponsive and was transported back to Renown.

Sheriff Chuck Allen has asked the Sparks Police Department to investigate this matter to facilitate an objective investigation by an un-involved agency. At this time, any further information will be released by the investigating agency.

In addition to the Sparks investigation, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office is conducting an internal investigation to determine if all agency policies, as well as standards of training and conduct, were followed.
