Sheriff Chuck Allen and the Subzero Heroes are ready to join Saturday's Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge

Sheriff Chuck Allen and a team of "Subzero Heroes" from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office will brave the chilly waters off Zephyr Cove this Saturday as part of the 2016 Polar Plunge benefit for Special Olympics.

Pre-plunge activities begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2016. The actual plunge is scheduled to begin at noon. Every person participating in the plunge has helped to raise money that supports thousands of Special Olympics athletes in Northern California and Nevada.

"The waters may be bone-chilling, but I still look forward to taking the plunge each year," Sheriff Allen said. "It's a great event with a great group of people, all that benefit an even greater cause."

According to the Polar Plunge website, all funds raised through the Polar Plunge benefit the more than 22,052 Special Olympics athletes in Northern California and Nevada.

"You Polar Plunge so that the Special Olympics athletes in your neighborhood can compete. Everyone deserves a chance at a happy and purposeful life. Yet people with intellectual disabilities can face doubt, barriers and low expectations. For many, Special Olympics is the only place where they find an opportunity to participate in their communities, develop belief in themselves, and feel like champions. Make athletes' dreams come true and have a blast at the Plunge!"

Special Olympics

  • Provides sports training and competition opportunities to 22,052 children and adults with intellectual disabilities
  • Provides practices and 184 competition opportunities per year to the athletes at no cost to the athletes or their families
  • Has 9,846 special education student-athletes participate in the Schools Partnership Program with the assistance of over 33,444 general education peer partners
  • Receives limited federal funding, but relies on fundraising events like the Polar Plunge
