Escaped inmate receives additional charges following Sheriff's Office investigation

A Washoe County Detention Facility inmate now faces additional felony and misdemeanor charges following a Sheriff's Office investigation into his escape from the custody of Reno Police Department detectives on Friday afternoon.

Javier Angel Saldana is accused of stealing a Reno Police Department detective's vehicle at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016. According to the investigation, Saldana, who was being held on misdemeanor charges at the time, was in the custody of the RPD detective and had access to his vehicle when the theft occurred.

The RPD vehicle was recovered intact later Friday afternoon. Saldana was taken back into custody at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, 2016.

The Sheriff's Office was asked to conduct a criminal investigation into the actions of Saldana. The investigation determined there was probable cause to additionally charge Saldana with Grand Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, a felony, Escape by a Non-felony Prisoner, a gross misdemeanor, and a misdemeanor Possession of Stolen Property.
