Statistics from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office participation in a recent Joining Forces "Click it or Ticket" traffic safety campaign indicate that drivers are getting the message about the importance of wearing seat belts, but still need to drive within posted speed limits.

The Sheriff's Office, along with officers from the Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, Nevada Highway Patrol and the University of Nevada, Reno Police Department, conducted the "Click it or Ticket" campaign from November 20 through December 7, 2015. During that time, Sheriff's Office staff dedicated to this Joining Forces campaign issued approximately 400 citations. Of those, only nine were for seat belt violations and two were for child safety seat violations. However, more than 200 citations were issued for speeding.

"Seat belt use is an important public safety issue for us and we are glad to see that drivers seem to be getting the message," Washoe County Sheriff Chuck Allen said. "But I want to remind all drivers that seat belts are just one of many important factors that keep our roads safe.

"As Christmas and the New Year approach, I ask each of you to make a commitment that you will obey posted speed limits, stay focused on the road, wear your seatbelt, and never drive while under the influence. This will help ensure that you, those you love, and all those you share the road with will have a safe and enjoyable holiday season."

The following results for this campaign are from the Sheriff's Office portion of this campaign only.

Sheriff's Office patrol staff assigned to this "Click it or Ticket" campaign initiated a total of 317 traffic stops. Although a driver may be stopped for one violation, several other violations may be observed during the subsequent investigation making it possible that a driver may be issued citations for numerous violations.

The total number of violations cited and warnings issued by the Sheriff's Office during this event was 411:

212 speeding violations
39 cell phone use
9 seat belt violations
2 child seat violations
5 running a red light
41 motor vehicle registration violations
48 failure to show proof of insurance
24 driver's license related violations
7 equipment violations
1 failure to yield
1 drug arrest
3 other citations
19 warnings

The Sheriff's Office participation in this Joining Forces campaign was made possible by grant funding received from the Nevada Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety.

Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program aimed at reducing injuries and crashes through statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, speed, distracted driving, seat belt and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.
