All six vehicles recovered from Kiowa Ponds by volunteers from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office HASTY Team on Make A Difference Day were reported as stolen according to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
The most recent reported theft occurred in 2007, the remaining five thefts occurred between 1996 and 1998. Three of the vehicles were reported stolen in Reno, two from Sparks and one from Sacramento, CA. All agencies involved have been notified of the recovery.
On October 24, 2015 (Make A Difference Day), the Sheriff's Office partnered with the U.S. Forest Service, City Auto Towing, Campbell Construction Company and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles to carry out this recovery operation that is taking advantage of extremely low water levels to access the vehicles.
The vehicles had been a longstanding hazard and concern for people who recreate in the area. Recent low water levels and the need for HASTY team volunteers to conduct a "Black Water" training exercise presented a unique opportunity to finally have them removed.
Divers outfitted in full containment suits helped attach chains and other equipment necessary to drag the vehicles from the pond.
