CONTACT: Brooke Howard Division Manager-Community Engagement Office 775-785-6205

Washoe County Sheriff Chuck Allen and members of his staff will pay tribute to a very special group of community volunteers this afternoon. The Sheriff will take part in an awards ceremony to recognize and thank the many volunteers who donate their much-needed services to the Sheriff's Office Detention Facility.

What: Washoe County Sheriff Chuck Allen thanks Detention Facility Volunteers

When: 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Where: Washoe County Sheriff's Office Nevada Room, second floor of 911 Parr Blvd.

"Volunteering to work in a jail takes a unique individual," Sheriff Allen said. "One who can work within a restrictive environment while obtaining satisfaction in helping others to become successful members of society. Some would choose an easier path, but these volunteers rose to the challenge and made a personal commitment to consistently provide our inmates with religious, social, educational, recreational and other services that enhance their personal development and create links between those incarcerated and the community."

The Detention Bureau has over 55 active volunteers working in the jail. The median number of hours volunteered was 52 per person last year, which calculates to roughly three thousand hours per year of service.

Volunteers represent many community-based organizations, educational institutions, churches, businesses, and individuals. They all share a commitment to promote activities that help the Sheriff's Office reduce recidivism.

Volunteers bring a variety of unique talents, skills, and knowledge, providing religious, social, educational, recreational, and other services that enhance personal development and create links between those incarcerated and the community.

The Sheriff's Office has benefited from the services of Detention Facility volunteers for decades. A few of the volunteers expected to attend this afternoon's event have been with the Office for over 25 years. Services provided by volunteers include but are not limited to:

  • Alcoholics Anonymous Groups
  • Narcotics Anonymous Groups
  • G.E.D./Vocational Skills
  • Gift of Literacy Program
  • Parenting and Family
  • Religious Services
  • Veterans Justice Outreach Program
  • Work Readiness
  • Asana (Yoga)
