Sheriff's RAVEN helicopter grounded after laser strike |

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's assistance with identifying the person or persons suspected of pointing a laser at the Sheriff's Office RAVEN helicopter.
On September 1, 2015 at approximately 8:30 p.m. the Sheriff's RAVEN helicopter was on routine patrol over downtown Reno when it was struck by a laser. Further investigation revealed the light source coming from the area of Rampion Dr. in Sun Valley. While attempting to determine an exact location both the pilot and tactical flight observer were struck several times by the laser in their eyes. As a result of the laser strikes, the helicopter was forced to land at the Stead Airport. Both the pilot and observer were taken to a local hospital for treatment and have since been released.
According to RAVEN Chief Pilot Deputy Doug Russell, "laser strikes on aircraft is an increasing problem in the Truckee Meadows area". Russell advised, "besides RAVEN, CareFlight, and commercial airlines have also reported laser strikes in the recent months."
Aiming a laser at an aircraft creates a serious safety risk that violates local and federal law. It is a felony in the State of Nevada to aim a laser pointer at any aircraft. It is important for the public to understand that this type of criminal activity could have deadly repercussions for the crews of helicopters and airplanes.
Secret Witness is offering a $1500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for Tuesday's incident.
