The Washoe County Sheriff's Office issued more than 230 speeding citations during a three-week, multi-agency Joining Forces speed enforcement campaign held in June.

The Sheriff's Office participation in this Joining Forces campaign is part of ongoing efforts by Nevada law enforcement agencies to increase public safety by enforcing speed laws, and reminding motorists of the dangers of driving at unsafe speeds.

From June 1 through June 21, 2015, the Sheriff's Office joined the Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department and Nevada Highway Patrol for this high-intensity traffic enforcement campaign which focuses on the importance of observing speed laws in order to keep Washoe County roads, and those who use them, safer.

Sheriff's Office patrol staff assigned to the Joining Forces campaign initiated a total of 281 traffic stops. Although a driver may be stopped for one violation, several other violations may be observed during the subsequent investigation making it possible that a driver may be issued citations for numerous violations.

The total number of violations cited and warnings issued during this event was 344. Most of those citations, 233, were issued for speed violations.

Violations cited by the Sheriff's Office include:

233 speeding
19 cell phone use/distracted driving
34 failure to show proof of insurance
22 driver's license related violations
10 motor vehicle registration violations
7 vehicle equipment violations
4 violation for running a red light
1 seat belt violation
3 other violations
11 warnings

Sheriff's Office participation in this Joining Forces speed enforcement campaign was made possible by grant funding received from the Nevada Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety.

Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, distracted driving, seat belt, and speed and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.
