Sheriff's Office Crimes against Children Unit among the individuals and organizations that will be recognized at Wednesday's Victims' Rights Vigil

Detectives from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Crimes against Children Unit will be among those honored at this week's Alliance for Victims' Rights annual Candlelight Vigil and Awards Ceremony.

The Unit will be receiving the Alliance for Victims' Rights Outstanding Unit in the Criminal Justice System Award. This award recognizes an outstanding agency or specialized unit whose "actions represent a passion in the pursuit of justice for those they serve. This agency or unit goes above and beyond the call of duty to serve victims of crime and ensure that they are treated with dignity and respect."

The Sheriff's Office Crimes against Children Unit is comprised of four Detectives. The Unit received over 230 cases in the past 12 months. These cases include abuse and neglect, lewdness with a child, sexual assault against a child and child pornography.

Washoe County Sheriff Chuck Allen said that it is a great honor for the Sheriff's Office to have this Unit recognized along with the other outstanding community members, volunteers, agencies and businesses who all work together on behalf of the of victims in our community.

"Through their training, they are able to pursue justice with professionalism and sensitivity. Through their compassion they have often gone above and beyond to provide much needed assistance for those they serve," Sheriff Allen said. "This phenomenal group of Detectives fully understands the important role law enforcement plays in supporting victims of crime."

Sheriff Allen is scheduled to present welcoming remarks at this year's Victims' Rights Vigil and Awards Ceremony. The event will be held at the Mills B. Lane Justice Center and begins at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22.

Everyone is invited to come and show their support for those who have been victims of crime.
