Teamwork, excitement and the pride that comes with serving a critical role in the public safety of our community are just some of the benefits of becoming a Washoe County Sheriff's Reserve Deputy.

The Sheriff's Reserve Program provides an unparalleled opportunity for those who are anxious to give back to the community. This program is perfect for working and retired personnel who are looking for something extra to fulfill their commitment to family and community, and for young people wanting to gain experience while awaiting their opportunity to serve as a full-time Deputy Sheriff.

"One of my primary goals is to build a strong Deputy Reserve Program in which dedicated and highly trained volunteers have the opportunity to perform alongside full-time Deputies," Washoe County Sheriff Chuck Allen said. "Volunteers and staff will serve as one to create a more visible presence of uniformed personnel and provide a more viable service to all county taxpayers."

If you feel the call, now is your chance to serve.

The Sheriff's Office is holding a one-month open recruitment for the 2015 Reserve Academy from February 2015 through March 2015. Qualified applicants will enter a regional law enforcement academy scheduled to begin in July of 2015.

Once the academy and other required training has been completed, Reserve Deputies will serve a vital role in the Sheriff's Office mission to provide top quality public safety services to the citizens of Washoe County. Duties include:

  • Increased law enforcement presence during special events
  • Important resource for disaster response such as fires, floods and other major incidents
  • Serve as a second Deputy in a patrol unit
  • Supplemental resource incident and crime scene response
  • Possible boat patrol on Lake Tahoe once appropriate training is completed

Washoe County Sheriff's Reserve Deputy applicants must be at least 21-years-old at the start of the academy, possess a valid driver's license, be a United States citizen, and have a high school diploma or the equivalent. All applicants will be subject to a background check.
