The Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Reno and Sparks Police Departments, and Nevada Highway Patrol recently participated in a Click It or Ticket seatbelt safety campaign funded by Nevada's Joining Forces Program.

From November 13 through December 2, 2014, units assigned to this special joint operation concentrated on enforcing seatbelt violations as part of ongoing efforts to reduce accidents and injuries on local roads. Based on citations issued during this campaign, more motorists are wearing their seatbelts but many are still driving above the speed limit or using cell phones while driving.

The following numbers represent only the Sheriff's Office portion of this joint campaign.

Sheriff's Office patrol staff who participated in the Click It or Ticket program initiated a total of 296 traffic stops. From those, there were five citations for seatbelt violations. During that time period, an additional eight citations for seatbelt violations were issued by Sheriff's Office motor units during their regular patrol duties, i.e.: units not assigned to the Joining Forces campaign.

However, units assigned to this Joining Forces effort did issue nearly 250 citations for either speeding or cell phone use. A reminder to all drivers that obeying posted speed limits and focusing on the road while driving will help to keep our roads safer.

The total number of violations cited and warnings issued by the Sheriff's Office during this event was 413. Although a driver may be stopped for one violation, several other violations may be observed during the subsequent investigation making it possible that a driver may be issued citations for numerous violations.

Violations cited by the Sheriff's Office during the November 13 - December 2 Click It or Ticket campaign include:

181 speeding
65 cell phone use
5 seatbelt violations
36 failure to show proof of insurance
39 driver's license related violations
20 motor vehicle registration violations
9 vehicle equipment violations
5 violations for running a red light
8 failing to yield the right of way
15 all other violations
28 warnings
2 drug and fugitive arrests

Sheriff's Office participation in this Joining Forces seatbelt enforcement campaign was made possible by grant funding received from the Nevada Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety.

Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, distracted driving, seat belt, and speed and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.
