Donations needed for Sheriff's Office Christmas on the Corridor

CONTACT: Brooke Howard Division Manager-Community Engagement Office 775-785-6205

The Reno Sparks Corridor Business Association and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office are asking for the public's help in making Christmas a little brighter for children and seniors who live in Reno's 4th, 5th and 6th Street "Corridor" by donating to the 18th annual Christmas on the Corridor.

"As the season of giving approaches, it is important to keep those who are less fortunate in our holiday plans," Detention Programs Coordinator Brooke Howard said. "Christmas on the Corridor provides over 1,000 local children and seniors with much-needed essentials such as coats, school supplies, hygiene items, clothing and food along with a little holiday joy such as toys, books, puzzles and much more."

Christmas on the Corridor started in 1996 as a simple opportunity to hand out cookies to children in the downtown corridor and has grown into a huge community event. In addition to helping those living in local motels, Christmas on the Corridor has teamed up with the Washoe County School District's Homeless and Transition Program to provide gifts to thousands of students.

To help make this year's event a success, donations of the following new items are needed:

  • Coats, hats, and gloves
  • Backpacks and school supplies
  • Toys of all kinds for all ages
  • Games for teens and tweens, MP3 players, movie passes or electronics
  • Monetary donations
  • Shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes
  • Books on CD, puzzles, paint by number sets, slippers, lap blankets, and anything else that would be appreciated by seniors

The deadline for donations for the 2014 Christmas on the Corridor event is December 15.

Donated items may be dropped off at the Sheriff's Community Work Program Office located at 350 S. Center St., #101 (directly across from the Downtown Reno Library) between 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, Fred's Auto Repair at 500 E. 6th St., Records Dept. at 911 Parr Blvd. or mailed to the Alternatives to Incarceration, PO Box 11130, Reno, NV 89520-0027.

Donated items will be distributed during the Christmas on the Corridor event on Saturday, December 20, 2014. The event begins in the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center at 9:00 a.m. and includes Santa's gift-giving caravan that visits a number of area motels.

Volunteers are always welcome. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and all volunteers must ride in the caravan vehicles. To volunteer, call (775) 785-4239 or send an e-mail to:
SO-OutreachPrograms@washoecounty.us.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Reno Sparks Corridor Business Association, and their partners both public and private endeavor to bring Christmas to many children who would otherwise go without. They also sponsor families throughout the year providing food, clothing, everyday essentials and school supplies.
