The Washoe County Sheriff's Office responded to half a dozen vehicle burglary reports in the Verdi area during the past two weeks. In each case, it appears that the vehicles involved were left unlocked. Since October is National Crime Prevention Month, the Sheriff's Office wants to remind residents that vehicle burglaries are one of the most preventable crimes that continue to occur in our area.
Last year during National Crime Prevention Month, the Sheriff's Office launched "Take ConTRoL," a crime prevention campaign focusing on tips that help keep vehicles and valuables safe.
The Take ConTRoL campaign has four key messages, each equally important and each a valuable reminder that there are steps everyone can take to prevent vehicle burglaries:
C - Clean it Out: remove valuables from your vehicle
T - Take your keys with you. Never leave your car running
R - Report suspicious activity or crimes to the proper authorities as soon as possible
L - Lock your doors every time. Sheriff's Office statistics show that 75 percent of this year's vehicle burglaries involved vehicles that were left unlocked
