Once a year, a rare opportunity to drive big equipment rumbles into town. This year, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office is supporting the American Cancer Society's fall fundraiser, known as the Reno Big Dig, puts the pedal to the metal September 20th at the Rilite Aggregate Pit south of Reno for this once in a lifetime event.

This is a chance for kids of all ages to get their big rig on and drive heavy equipment. Participants can drive/ride dozers, graders, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks and more. They may also explore static exhibits from the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, REMSA, and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office RAVEN, Search & Rescue and SWAT programs. The day includes special appearances by Wolf Pack mascot Alphie along with Bruno of the Reno Bighorns.

"We're moving mountains to fight cancer here in northern Nevada," said David Knaub of K7 Construction, this year's event Chairman. "This is our 16th year putting on the Big Dig helping cancer patients here in our area." Knaub said.

This year "dig off" pits the fire department against the police department in a challenge for whom can dig the fastest and bury the giant cigarette.

The American Cancer Society helps children and adults alike in the fight against cancer. The Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.

With chartered divisions throughout the country and over 3,400 local offices, the American Cancer Society (ACS) is committed to fighting cancer through balanced programs of research, education, patient service, advocacy and rehabilitation.

Sponsorships are still available at RenoBigDig.org and tickets are available at the gate. Individual tickets are $150 but we won't turn anyone away. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society and will help fund Pediatric Cancer Research.
