Ninety new dog beds recently purchased by Washoe County Regional Animal Services are an important step in ongoing efforts to ensure that animals are provided with the necessary standard of care while at the facility.
Animal Services had not replaced the bedding for dogs since sometime before moving into the new Longley facility back in 2006.
The new metal-framed, Kuranda brand beds were strongly recommended in the 2009 American Humane Shelter Assessment of the County’s Animal Services because of the bed’s durability, easy maintenance and “chew-proof” guarantee.
The new beds are great for small dogs and sturdy enough for large dogs. They keep the dogs up off of the floor and comfortable during their stay at animal services and are easy for staff to clean.
“Everybody benefits from these new beds,” Brode said. “The dogs love them because they are more comfortable. It’s easier for staff to thoroughly sanitize the dog’s enclosure, and customers are able to visit with dogs that are less-stressed and in a cleaner environment.”
The beds cost $77.50 each and were purchased through Animal Services’ general operating funds.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office celebrated 150 years of proud service and community partnership in 2011. Sheriff Michael Haley is the 25th person elected to serve as the Sheriff of Washoe County. His office continues to be the only full service public safety agency operating within northern Nevada and is responsible for operating the consolidated detention facility, regional crime lab, Northern Nevada Counter Terrorism Center, Internet Crimes against Children Task Force, court security, service of civil process, traditional street patrols and Regional Animal Services.
