Traffic Enforcement

Main Phone: (775) 328-3350
Lieutenant Dean Spur

The Traffic Enforcement Unit has two major components:

1. The Major Accident Investigation Team

2. The Motorcycle Unit

Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT)

The Major Accident Investigation Team responds to and conducts the investigation of all fatal, major injury, and extensive property damage due to motor vehicle traffic accidents.

All M.A.I.T.-qualified personnel are highly trained in the field of accident investigation. The minimum level of training achieved by these personnel is Technical Accident Investigation (or equivalent). Ongoing training for M.A.I.T. personnel is conducted quarterly in the various specialized fields of accident investigation.

The M.A.I.T. team works closely with the Washoe County District Attorney's Office in investigating accidents that involve possible prosecution, and they provide assistance to other local law enforcement agencies when requested.

Motors Unit

The Sheriff's Office uses motorcycles for traffic-specific patrol duties. Currently there are eight BMW police-package motorcycles assigned to the division.

The citizens of Washoe County continue to experience a significant reduction in the number and severity of accidents, due in part to a continual citizen service referral system.  This results in a savings to taxpayers within the unincorporated areas of the county in excess of 60 million dollars.

Citizens with specific traffic-related complaints should call the front desk at 328-3001 or their Community Liaison Deputy.  A request for service form will be completed and proactive steps will then be taken by the Patrol Division.  This may including the posting of a mobile radar trailer, which advises the drivers passing by of their speed. The radar trailer is then followed by enforcement action - usually deputies assigned to the Motors Unit.
