Kid's Korner is a home-based,
community outreach program that addresses the health and welfare
of young children in the local area. Free health care and other
services are offered to families who may not know about or are unable
to access resources and services available in the community. The
program was created in 1996 and is a collaborative partnership between
Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Reno Police Department, Sparks Police
Department, the Washoe County District Health Department, Washoe
County Social Services, St. Mary's Community Outreach and Washoe
County Senior Services.
A team from the participating
agencies goes door to door, knocking and talking, offering information,
assistance, and referrals to Saint Mary's Take Care-A-Van. Health
care services that are offered include child health examinations,
screening and treatment of minor illnesses, education about symptoms
and treatments for family health issues, referrals to other health
care providers for continued primary care and immunizations. Providing
immunizations to young children who would otherwise not have access
to normal public health services is a significant part of the Kid's
Korner program.
The mission of Kid’s-to-Senior’s
Korner is to assist vulnerable individuals and families, with special
emphasis on homeless children and seniors, by linking and providing
them with community resources through a collaborative community
partnership to increase their quality of life.
