RESERVE DEPUTY PROGRAM - (*Reserve Application - PDF)

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office has an active Reserve Deputy Sheriff Program, which is operated in support of line personnel in the Patrol Division and the Detention Bureau. Upon completion of a Reserve Training Academy, reserve deputies are put through a modified field/facility training program to ensure they are each properly trained and qualified for duty.

Reserve deputies work side by side with full-time personnel and perform the same function as line personnel (see below). Each Reserve Deputy Sheriff must work a minimum of two 8-hour shifts per month in addition to attending a monthly training meeting.


Reserve deputies receive no monetary compensation for their participation in the Reserve Deputy Sheriff Program.

 

The Job

The major duties of the reserve deputy job include performing the following under the direction of sworn employees:

  • Observe activities in an assigned area to maintain order, deter crime and/or traffic violations, enforce laws, and take enforcement action as appropriate.
  • Respond to calls for service, evaluate the situation, implement appropriate action, including arrest, mediation between parties, emergency medical aid, and referral to other agencies.
  • Investigate observed or reported crimes, traffic accidents and offenses, and other incidents to determine the relevant factors of the crime committed.
  • Write reports documenting information gathered and actions taken as a result of calls for service, investigations, field interviews, citations, arrests, service for civil process, use of force, and inmate disturbances.
  • Regulate crowds at public gatherings, special events, and within a housing unit, including maintaining order and quelling riots and other disturbances in order to promote public and inmate safety.
  • Testify at judicial proceedings and administrative hearings to present evidence and information relevant to the proceedings.
  • Maintain security, search, and supervise the conduct and transport of arrestees and inmates within or outside the Detention Facility.
  • Assign inmates to housing areas, including conducting interviews and reviewing backgrounds, and provide orientation to new inmates regarding rules, regulations, and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate court appearances for inmates on videotape or transport inmates in person; coordinate dates of appearance and communicate with judges and court staff; maintain security of inmates during court appearances.
  • Review and respond to inmate requests and grievances, including conducting inmate disciplinary hearings to determine if sanctions are warranted.
Other duties that may be assigned:
  • Serve and execute civil and criminal process, including search warrants, warrants for arrest, and civil papers such as writs, evictions, and subpoenas.
  • Perform daily inspections of assigned work area and/or vehicle to ensure maintenance of equipment, cleanliness, and security.
  • Fingerprint and photograph inmates and subjects to obtain evidence and/or reports.
  • Operate and monitor electronic equipment allowing for movement of staff and inmates within the Detention Facility.
  • Search and rescue operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a General Education Development (G.E.D.) certificate.
  • Must be 21 years of age at the time of the start of academy training.
  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and for continued appointment in this position.
  • Is a citizen of the United States

NOTE: Possession of a current Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training Committee (P.O.S.T.) Category I Basic or Nevada P.O.S.T. Reserve Basic Certificate is desirable.

Appeals from disqualified applicants must be received in the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Patrol Captain's Office within seven (7) calendar days from the date of the disqualification letter.

Special Notes

  • Selected candidates must complete a Personal History Statement, and all applicants must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Selected candidates must pass the P.O.S.T. Physical Fitness Test Battery prior to starting the Reserve Deputies Academy
  • Selected candidates must successful complete a polygraph or voice stress examination.
  • Selected candidates must pass a pre-employment medical examination and psychological examination.
  • Selected candidates must be willing to submit a set of fingerprints and DNA sample.
  • Selected candidates must pass a Reserve Academy or possess a Nevada P.O.S.T. Category I or Nevada P.O.S.T. Reserve Basic Certificate prior to appointment.

Class Schedule

Classes for the Reserve Deputies Academy are usually held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Northern Nevada Law Enforcement Academy, 5190 Spectrum Blvd, Reno, Nevada.

In order for you to be considered for this program, you must complete a Washoe County Sheriff's Office Application for Reserve Deputy Sheriff. It is your responsibility to provide specific, accurate, and complete information describing how you meet the minimum qualifications in your original application materials, as no additional information will be considered after the filing deadline. A resume may be submitted in addition to, but not in lieu of, any portion of the application. Forms are available through the Sheriff's Office Patrol Division, 911 Parr Boulevard, Reno, Nevada.

Selection Process

Qualified candidates will be placed on an unranked, eligible list. The final selection of the successful candidates will be made by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
