The Patrol Division of the Washoe
County Sheriff's Office currently has an active bicycle patrol at
both the Reno Office and the Incline Village Substation. Trained
personnel within the Patrol Division use the bicycles to actively
patrol locations that are difficult to access with a regular patrol
car, such as beaches, hillside trails, parking lots, and schools.
Bicycle patrol is also used extensively
in heavily congested areas and during special events. The patrol
is used as a deterrent to crime at events such as the Reno Rodeo,
Skyfire, and the Greater Reno Balloon Races. Personnel assigned
to this patrol are able to maintain a visible and highly mobile
presence at these events.
Bicycle patrol personnel receive
specific training in the proper use of the bicycle for law enforcement
patrol duties. They often work in conjunction with officers from
other agencies, each utilizing a bicycle to patrol in order to address
specific problem areas and/or citizen complaints.
Bicycle rodeos and bicycle registration
forums are conducted at local schools for children. This program
instructs children in bicycle safety and the proper handling and
care of their bicycles. They are also able to register their bicycles
to maintain records in the event of theft.
