Regional Human Trafficking and Exploitation (HEAT) Unit
The Regional Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit is comprised of law enforcement personnel throughout the Truckee Meadows with detectives from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, University of Nevada Police Department-Northern Command, and Washoe County School District Police, as well as, a Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Advocate and support personnel.
HEAT is responsible for investigating sex trafficking and pandering related crimes, providing training and awareness to the public, and training other law enforcement personnel.
The mission of the HEAT Unit is to (1) ensure the safety of our human trafficking victims; (2) actively pursue, arrest and imprison those who prey upon our vulnerable population; and (3) offer resources to our victims to help them successfully gain independence from their trafficker through a collaborated effort with community victim service providers.
By taking a victim centered approach and working with victim service providers, the HEAT unit offers resources to trafficking victims to help them regain their independence. The HEAT unit strives to hold all traffickers, of both children and adults, accountable for their actions by seeking the maximum sentence allowed by statute.
Please reach out to the HEAT Unit if you have any information regarding human trafficking, are interested in educational resources, or are interested in collaboration opportunities.
