Inmate Visiting Information

NOTE: Inmate Visiting can be cancelled at any time.  We suggest
you call before visiting.

Rules and Restrictions:

Inmates are allowed visitors based on their status. No more than two (2) visitors may visit at a time. No more than four (4) visitors will be allowed to utilize the video visiting system. A child is counted as a visitor. All visitors over 18 years of age are required to have a current and valid U. S. government-issued identification. Persons under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a legal guardian.  Visits are restricted to 30 minutes.

NO PERSONAL POSSESSIONS OF ANY KIND ARE ALLOWED IN THE VISITING AREA. THIS INCLUDES COATS, JACKETS, BABY CARRIERS, AND PICTURES.  

Secure lockers are available in the lobby, free of charge.

Visitors may be subject to a personal search at any time. Visitors that refuse to be searched will be denied access. Possession of illegal substances, possession of concealed weapons, attempts to pass contraband, and defacing public areas will result in arrest.

Visitor's clothing must conform to proper dress standards.

·    No clothing of transparent, or see-through material
·    No bare midriffs
·    No bare feet
·    No “muscle” shirts and no “spaghetti” straps
·    Visitors must wear appropriate undergarments
·    Shorts and dresses must be mid-thigh length

Final determination will be made by detention facility personnel.

Anyone failing to comply with these rules will be denied access to visiting.

Getting Messages to Inmates:

You may communicate with an inmate at any time via the U.S. mail. We receive daily deliveries from the U.S. Postal Service. All incoming mail is opened and searched for contraband (with the exception of legal correspondence).

INMATES MAY RECEIVE ONLY CARDS AND LETTERS. INMATES MAY RECEIVE MAGAZINES AND/OR BOOKS IF THEY COME DIRECTLY FROM THE PUBLISHER OR A BOOKSTORE.

1. What items are NOT allowed?

  • Postage stamps
  • Blank paper
  • Blank envelopes
  • Books or magazines that are not sent directly from the bookstore or publisher.
  • Hardback books (only paperback books are allowed)
  • Food, tobacco or clothing items
  • Packages
  • Drugs or weapons
  • Photographs, drawings or publications that contain nudity (including naked babies), sexually suggestive or gang related material.
  • No Polaroid photographs.
  • Metal or hard fasteners or binders
  • Musical greeting cards
  • Letters containing stickers and/or excessive amounts of glue
  • No pages from books or magazines (this includes photocopies).
  • No hair, body fluids or other unknown substances.
  • No perfume.
  • No laminated items.
  • No oversize items.
  • Personal checks
  • Anything that violates legal or postal regulations
  • Any other item that is deemed to be a threat to the safety or security of the facility.

2. How do I address a letter?

Inmate’s name, then the word “inmate” and the booking number if available (IE: John Doe, Inmate, 06-0000)

3. How do I send money to an inmate?

  • You can send money orders or cashier’s checks via U.S. Mail; do not send cash via the U. S. Mail.
  • Keefe Kiosk (located in the lobby – cash or credit card)
  • Internet Payments (credit cards via www.cybersuitehome.com)
  • Toll Free Telephone (credit cards via 1-866-345-1884)
  • Personal checks are not accepted.

4. Telephone Calls:

Inmates cannot receive telephone calls. Inmate phone services are contracted through Securus Technologies.  Inmates purchase phone cards through Keefe Commissary Network or they can make collect phone calls from the Housing units through Securus. Securus will bill your phone number for collect phone calls.  You should contact Securus at 1-800-844-6591 to block calls from an inmate, unblock calls from an inmate, or are experiencing connection or account problems.

5. Services and Programs for Inmates:

The Commissary stocks snack foods, writing papers, stamped envelopes, toiletries, over-the-counter medications, and art materials. Each Housing Unit receives commissary once a week.  You can order Commissary items for inmates via the internet: www.WashoePackages.com

The Medical Unit provides 24-hour health care for inmates. Dental care is available by appointment. Prescription medication is provided, as required.

Religious Services are offered by various denominations on a regular schedule. There is a chaplain available for counseling, on request.  328-2976

Educational Programs for inmates include high school diploma courses and literacy tutoring. There are regular courses and counseling for substance abuse, including AA and NA meetings.  328-2976

Exercise Yards are available for each Housing Unit.

6. Release Procedures:

All inmates are interviewed for an "Own Recognizance" release.

If you are posting bail, the courts will accept only:

1. U.S. currency

2. Certified or cashiers checks drawn on U.S. banks

3. Postal money orders (with the amount typed or stamped)

4. Bonds posted by accepted bail agents (except cash-only bails and fines)

Money orders, certified and cashier checks should be made payable to the court hearing the case.

Once bail is posted, the release procedure takes from one to four hours. Bail and court-ordered releases take place as processed.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office cannot recommend or suggest a bail company.

The normal time for TIME SERVED releases is 5:00 a.m. We do not provide transportation from the Detention Facility. Citi-Fare buses run a regular schedule between the facility and downtown Reno.
