DEPUTY SHERIFF (Recruit and P.O.S.T. Certified)
Washoe County maintains three lists for persons interested in employment as a deputy sheriff.
Law enforcement officers with P.O.S.T. certification from other states must apply through the Deputy Sheriff recruitment process, not the Inter-jurisdictional Deputy Sheriff process.
Persons interested in applying for positions must complete a Washoe County employment application and supplemental information. Applicants can fill out the application and look at the job announcement from the Human Resources website: http://www.washoecounty.us/humanresources/careers/jobs.htm. Human Resources will not accept a resume in lieu of an application; but, a resume may be attached to the application. The website includes specific information on the application process including necessary qualifications and selection criteria.
Applications for Deputy Sheriff positions are accepted ONLY when listed on the Job Opportunities list. If the Job Opportunities list does not include Deputy Sheriff Recruit or Deputy Sheriff P.O.S.T. you may not submit an application at that time. Applicants should check the website the first Friday of every month.

Hiring process for both Deputy Sheriff Recruit and Deputy Sheriff - P.O.S.T. Certified:
1. Candidates must meet the minimum Nevada P.O.S.T. qualifications
NAC 289.110 Minimum standards for appointment. (NAC 289.110)
1. No person may be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer unless he:
(a) Has undergone a complete and documented investigation of his background which verifies that he has good moral character and meets the minimum standards established by the commission;
(b) Is a citizen of the United States;
(c) Is at least 21 years of age at the time of his appointment;
(d) Has successfully completed the 12th grade or has been certified by an appropriate authority as having an equivalent education; and
(e) Has undergone a medical examination performed by a licensed physician who confirms in writing that no physical condition exists which would adversely affect his performance of the duties of a peace officer. The employing agency shall inform the examining physician of the specific functions required by the position to be filled.
2. A person may not be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer if he has:
(a) Been convicted of a felony in this state or of any offense which would be a felony if committed in this state;
(b) Been convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude or the unlawful use, sale or possession of a controlled substance; or
(c) A documented history of physical violence.

3. Physical Abilities Test - Selected candidates will be required to take a physical abilities test, which consists of exercises to measure an individual's strength, endurance, and agility. The test exercises are subject to changes but currently are composed of the following:

4. Background Investigation - Selected candidates must complete a Personal History Statement covering all aspects of the candidate’s history including employment, education, legal, financial, driving, military and family. Information will be verified by an investigator. Honesty and trustworthiness are important characteristics of a Deputy Sheriff.
5. Hiring Board - Hiring decisions are made by the Command staff of the Sheriff’s Office. Based on the facts and information from the background investigation, they make a decision to give a conditional offer of employment to a candidate or reject a candidate for employment.
6. CVSA (Computer Voice Stress Analysis) Examination - Selected candidates will be required to take a CVSA examination to verify information provided in the Background investigation. The examination is conducted by a certified CVSA Examiner.
7. Medical Examination and Drug Screening - Selected candidates will be required to have a physical examination and drug testing performed by a physician designated by the Sheriff. The cost of this examination will be borne by the Sheriff's Office. Certain conditions may disqualify a candidate from consideration.
One of the most common questions asked by candidates is in regard to the vision and hearing standards. In some cases, knowing this information ahead of time gives a candidate time to correct a deficit.
Vision standards include:
a. Visual acuity must be 20/20 in each eye with or without correction.
b. Wearers of hard and semi-rigid gas permeable contact lenses or glasses must have 20/40 uncorrected visual acuity.
c. Successful long-term, soft daily-wear contact lens wearers are subject to no uncorrected standard, provided the following conditions are met:
1) They have worn their lenses six months without complications;
2) They will replace their lenses every six months to one year or more frequently if the lens become uncomfortable or difficult to wear; and
3) They will clean the lenses on a regular basis as recommended by the manufacturer.
d. Visual acuity for corrected (surgery, orthokeratology, or radial keratotomy) to 20/20 needs individual evaluation.
e. Loss of color vision (color blindness) is not acceptable.
Hearing standards include:
a. Hearing loss attenuated by hearing aid is not acceptable.
b. Pure tone thresholds of audibility shall not exceed 25 dB HL in either right or left ears at the following audiometric frequencies: 25 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, 3000 Hz, 4000 Hz, 6000 Hz. Thresholds shall be measured adaptively under headphones using standard audiometric procedures.
8. Psychological Screening - Selected candidates will be required to undergo a psychological screening. This consists of a battery of tests and an interview with a psychologist.
