INMATE WORK PROGRAMS

In 2006 inmates working in the community provided 28,364 hours of labor on public works projects which saved about $297,834 to the taxpayers of Washoe County.

Inmate Work Crews are offenders sentenced to the jail who do not qualify for placement in an Alternative to Incarceration Program. These individuals are being held on a misdemeanor charge and are housed in the Detention Facility. The inmates must be cleared and released by the Medical personnel and the Inmate Management Unit to work throughout the community. Every inmate’s record is reviewed for limitations, classification level, and severity of crime and jail disciplinary record.

Inmate Work Crews have played roles in the completion of many valuable projects including prepping and painting schools, graffiti removal, various Public Works projects, landscaping parks, special events and maintenance and general street and public property clean up.

Inmate Work Crews consist of 3 to 8 inmates supervised by a Program Leader.  The inmates on the Work Crews can be identified by the striped uniforms worn while working outside the detention facility.
