The Crimes vs. Persons
Detectives investigate all major felony crimes such as homicide,
robbery, kidnapping, elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Detectives
cover all aspects of an investigation. They must work closely with
prosecutors, forensic investigators, lab personnel, and other law
enforcement officials.
The unit has an established
full-time "cold case" detective. This detective possesses
extensive knowledge of past unsolved homicides, unidentified remains,
and cases involving missing persons. The detective's abilities and
skills maximize the probability of a successful resolution to some
very difficult and challenging cases. The need for this assignment
has become more apparent with the progressive development of the
scientific examination of evidence, i.e., DNA.
The Crimes vs. Persons Unit has also added a Victim/Witness Advocate.
The advocate works closely with victims, witnesses, and family members
to keep them apprised of case development as well as assisting in
meeting any special needs they may have. The Victim/Witness Advocate
position ensures that the needs of the survivors and victims of
violent crime are not overlooked.

Crime Scene Investigation May 1998
Detectives working in
the Crimes vs. Persons Unit must be dedicated, resourceful, skilled,
and tireless investigators. They must "speak for the victims
that no longer can speak for themselves", thus earning the
title of "Homicide Detective."
