Citizen involvement makes our community
safer and stronger. There are four volunteers programs overseen by the Washoe
County Sheriff’s Office. These programs are briefly described below;

CITIZEN’S
ACADEMY
This free training program is open to
residents of
Washoe
County
and provides a broad overview of law enforcement in Reno/Sparks and
throughout
Washoe
County
. The Citizen’s Academy training is coordinated through the
Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with Reno Police
Department and Sparks Police Department.
SHERIFF’S
MOBILE AUXILLIARY RESPONSE TEAM (S.M.A.R.T)
The Sheriff Mobile Auxiliary Response
Team, Inc. was formed to allow Citizen’s Academy graduates to continue
volunteering. This team provides Command Post support at special
events, does electronic fingerprints for children, assists at the Victim
Impact Panel as well as various other activities supporting our community and
the Sheriff’s Office.
CITIZEN’S HOMELAND
SECURITY COUNCIL (CHSC)
The Citizen's Homeland Security Council
began as a call for community participation in order to alert our community
to the possibility of a terrorist event or natural disaster. Council
volunteers are trained to recognize and to understand what would be considered a
terrorist threat as well as what to do should an attack occur. These trained
eyes and ears make our community safer and more secure.
COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE
TEAM (CERT)
The Community Emergency Response Team
(CERT) is a program that helps educate citizens about hazards they may face and
trains them in lifesaving skills. Volunteers are trained in disaster
preparedness, fire safety, emergency medical, search and rescue, incident
command structure, disaster psychology and terrorism. CERT volunteers provide all hazards
response under the guidance of professional first responders.
AVIATION SECURITY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (ASVP)
The Aviation
Security Volunteer Program (ASVP) is a joint effort between the Washoe County
Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) and the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA)
Police. ASVP volunteers are Citizen's Homeland Security Council (CHSC) and
Community Emergency Response Team Volunteers (CERT) who have completed
additional training to provide support to airport police during heightened
alerts and special security initiatives.
