The Citizen’s
Police
Academy
is a 12 week (one night a week) course coordinated by the Reno Police
Department, Sparks Police Department, and the Washoe County Sheriff’s
Office. It is intended to give citizens an idea of what it is like to be a
law enforcement officer in our community. They receive classroom instruction
in topics such as domestic violence, gangs, graffiti, DUI enforcement and
drug awareness. Representatives from the K9 unit and the Bomb Squad give
demonstrations including use of Tasers and Felony
Traffic Stops. Students get to drive police cars, shoot at the law
enforcement range and participate in shoot/don’t shoot scenarios. After
graduation, they are encouraged to volunteer at one (or more) of the three
local agencies.
