Aviation Security Volunteer Program
The ASVP is a joint effort between the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) and the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) Police. ASVP volunteers are Citizen's Homeland Security Council (CHSC) and Community Emergency Response Team Volunteers (CERT) who have completed additional training to provide support to airport police during heightened alerts and special security initiatives. Volunteers pass background checks with the Sheriff's Office and are also fingerprinted and checked by the RTAA. The WCSO and RTAA have developed the training program jointly and are fielding the first Aviation Security Volunteer Task Force in Nevada.
Volunteers are provided with uniforms and equipment and will work the parking garage, curbside, ticketing and baggage claim as well as a few static posts behind the scenes. Between callouts they patrol in random 2-4 hour shifts with Airport Security Specialists at the airport and attend monthly in-service trainings. This helps them to maintain familiarity with the environment and stay up to speed on ever-changing regulations and alerts.
The 20 hours of ASVP training provided by the airport includes: Program Overview, RTAA Past, Present, and Future, RTAA Human Resources Training, Radio Procedures, SIDA Training/RTAA Police Dept Chain-Of-Command/ RTAA Employee Uniform Familiarization, Unattended Bag Procedures/Vehicle Searches for VBIED, and Dealing with an Upset Customer.
