The Training Section strives to improve the quality of law enforcement service to the community through quality training of the Sheriff's Office commissioned and non-commissioned personnel. Providing individual training to individual members increases their effectiveness and professional development.

The Training Section is composed of one sergeant, two deputies, and three civilians. Each employee is assigned to specific training duties within the unit. Nevada Administrative Code 289 (NAC) specifies the minimum standard of training for commissioned officers.   It is the responsibility of the Training Section to develop, coordinate, document and verify that staff members receive the required training.

Non-Mandated Functions:

Civilian Training - Civilians having contact with inmates are given eight hours of annual training for liability purposes.

Physical Maintenance Testing - Physical maintenance testing is required by The Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputy Association and The Washoe County Sheriff’s Supervisory Deputy Association contracts. Testing is conducted annually.

Supervisors' Continuing Education - Supervisors receive an additional eight hours of training unique to a supervisory role.

Detention Academy - This academy is required as phase one of the Detention FTO Program. Training consists of one week or 40 hours of training, which is required deputy training to function in the Detention Facility.
