Deputy Janet Bailey

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program was first developed in 1983. D.A.R.E. is a drug and violence prevention education program which represents a collaborative effort between school and law enforcement personnel. The D.A.R.E. curriculum is designed to equip elementary, middle, and high school students with the appropriate skills to resist substance abuse, violence, and gangs. It offers a variety of activity-oriented techniques designed to encourage student-generated responses for problem solving in various situations. The program is coordinated nationally by D.A.R.E. America with input received from state and local agencies and communities. It is taught by uniformed law enforcement officers in 52 countries, reaching 36 million school children around the world each year.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is a strong supporter of this program and dedicated to presenting its curriculum to the Washoe County community schools. The D.A.R.E. program has one full-time deputy assigned specifically to the program. The D.A.R.E. program is presented to 15 area elementary schools. Since adopting the program in 1989, the Sheriff's Office D.A.R.E. program has graduated over 11,000 students. Thousands more have been reached through short classroom visits by D.A.R.E. deputies who generally discuss the program material and other personal safety information.
