The Drug Abuse Resistance
Education (D.A.R.E.) program was first developed in 1983. D.A.R.E.
is a drug and violence prevention education program which represents
a collaborative effort between school and law enforcement personnel.
The D.A.R.E. curriculum is designed to equip elementary, middle,
and high school students with the appropriate skills to resist substance
abuse, violence, and gangs. It offers a variety of activity-oriented
techniques designed to encourage student-generated responses for
problem solving in various situations. The program is coordinated
nationally by D.A.R.E. America with input received from state and
local agencies and communities. It is taught by uniformed law enforcement
officers in 52 countries, reaching 36 million school children around
the world each year.
The Washoe County Sheriff's
Office is a strong supporter of this program and dedicated to presenting
its curriculum to the Washoe County community schools. The D.A.R.E.
program has one full-time deputy assigned specifically to the program.
The D.A.R.E. program is presented to 15 area elementary schools.
Since adopting the program in 1989, the Sheriff's Office D.A.R.E.
program has graduated over 11,000 students. Thousands more have
been reached through short classroom visits by D.A.R.E. deputies
who generally discuss the program material and other personal safety
information.
The curriculum focuses
on knowledge and skill development in seven areas:
D.A.R.E. MISSION
To provide children with
the information and skills they need to avoid tobacco and alcohol,
to live drug-free and violence-free lives.
D.A.R.E. GOALS
1. Seek to provide students
with a knowledge base on the effects of drug abuse that go beyond
the physical ramifications and extend to emotional, social and economic
aspects of life.
2. Aim to build decision-making
and problem-solving skills and strategies to help students make
informed decisions and resist drug use, peer pressure and violence.
3. Provide students with
alternatives to drug use.
In January of 2002, Lee
Bros. Leasing, Inc. donated a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Sport Wagon
to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office for use as a D.A.R.E. vehicle.
Tires Unlimited, Feature Graphics, and Summit Racing also donated
to the cause by supplying wheels, tires, and logos.
