The Washoe County Sheriff's
Office is concerned with keeping the community informed about the
operation of the Sheriff's Office. One of the ways to accomplish
this is by regularly keeping the news media, and thereby the public,
informed of events involving the Sheriff's Office and its personnel.
The Public Information Officer (P.I.O.) coordinates this by acting
as a liaison between the Sheriff's Office and media representatives.
Duties include assisting reporters assigned to cover news stories
and providing them with general information at the scene of major
incidents. Our goal is to provide timely and factual information
to the community we serve.
The P.I.O.
is available 24 hours a day to respond to the scene of major incidents.

At approximately 1208 hours 01/23/2010, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office North District Patrol personnel responded to a report of four injured subjects related to a target shooting accident.
The scene location between Sun Valley and Hungry Valley was not in the “Congested Area” where firearm use is restricted. Response to the scene was affected by the recent snowfall and condition of the dirt trails. Fire and EMS personnel were transported by WCSO patrol vehicles due to these conditions. Care Flight also responded.
Initial investigation reflects that all of the injured parties were observing other subjects who were shooting at a small medical oxygen bottle. The bottle subsequently exploded sending metal shrapnel into the injured parties.
All of the injured parties are residents of Reno and their names are currently being held to permit notification of family. None of the injuries are currently life threatening.
A 24 year old female was transported to Renown by Care Flight with lacerations and possible broken bones in her lower legs.
A 25 year old male and a 30 year old male were transported to Renown by REMSA ground ambulance with lacerations and possible lower leg fractures.
A 46 year old female transported herself to Renown with minor lacerations.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. Incident remains under investigation.
