The Washoe County Sheriff's
Office is concerned with keeping the community informed about the
operation of the Sheriff's Office. One of the ways to accomplish
this is by regularly keeping the news media, and thereby the public,
informed of events involving the Sheriff's Office and its personnel.
The Public Information Officer (P.I.O.) coordinates this by acting
as a liaison between the Sheriff's Office and media representatives.
Duties include assisting reporters assigned to cover news stories
and providing them with general information at the scene of major
incidents. Our goal is to provide timely and factual information
to the community we serve.
The P.I.O.
is available 24 hours a day to respond to the scene of major incidents.

On March 3, 2010, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office received information from an out of town homeowner that his property on the Mt. Rose Hwy may have been burglarized.
Deputies responded to the residence and discovered that the house had been ransacked and at least $50,000 worth of property had been stolen. It also appeared that the suspects may have plans to return and steal more items.
Washoe County Sheriff Detectives investigated and setup surveillance on the property. At approximately 1:00 pm, on March 4th the suspects returned to the residence and were observed moving items from the property.
Sheriff’s Office Patrol Units and K-9 teams where called in to assist. Due to the extended distance between the Mt. Rose Highway and the residence the suspects where able to flee on foot down the back side of Mount Rose.
A Sheriff Patrol unit located one suspect hiding in the Galena Creek Park area. Richard Douglas Kaylor, 69 years old, a resident of Reno was taken into custody without incident.
The second suspect believed to be Charles Jacob Steele, 32 years old. He was able to elude capture and is being sought for questioning.
Detectives located a large number of stolen items from the Mount Rose home at the suspect’s residence and the investigation is on-going.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about this crime or anyone that knows the whereabouts of Charles Jacob Steele to contact Detective Don Day at 328-3320, 328-6323 or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
