The Washoe County Sheriff's
Office is concerned with keeping the community informed about the
operation of the Sheriff's Office. One of the ways to accomplish
this is by regularly keeping the news media, and thereby the public,
informed of events involving the Sheriff's Office and its personnel.
The Public Information Officer (P.I.O.) coordinates this by acting
as a liaison between the Sheriff's Office and media representatives.
Duties include assisting reporters assigned to cover news stories
and providing them with general information at the scene of major
incidents. Our goal is to provide timely and factual information
to the community we serve.
The P.I.O.
is available 24 hours a day to respond to the scene of major incidents.

Using Technology to Lure Children Arrest

CHARGES: One count of Using Technology to Lure Children, one count of Violation of a Protection Order, and one count of Stalking – Use of Internet. Bail $18,000.00.

Washoe County Deputies responded to a call on Forest View Lane in Reno on a report of a 14 year old female juvenile that received offerings of a sexual nature from a male adult. The sex offerings were received via a Facebook account.
On June 12, 2010 at approximately 8PM, deputies arrived and met with the victim. The deputies were shown the sexual content. The victim said the male suspect logged on as someone else and pretended to be a friend. The victim identified the alleged suspect as Jared Smith. Deputies attempted to contact Jared Smith but were unable to locate him.
On June 13, 2010 at approximately 10AM, Jared Smith contacted the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and agreed to meet with deputies. Through the investigation, the deputies determined Jared Smith did send the female victim messages which were sexual in nature.
Jared Smith was booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility for Using Technology to Lure Children, Violation of a Protection Order, Stalking – Use of the Internet. His bail was set at $18,000.00.
