The Washoe County Sheriff's
Office is concerned with keeping the community informed about the
operation of the Sheriff's Office. One of the ways to accomplish
this is by regularly keeping the news media, and thereby the public,
informed of events involving the Sheriff's Office and its personnel.
The Public Information Officer (P.I.O.) coordinates this by acting
as a liaison between the Sheriff's Office and media representatives.
Duties include assisting reporters assigned to cover news stories
and providing them with general information at the scene of major
incidents. Our goal is to provide timely and factual information
to the community we serve.
The P.I.O.
is available 24 hours a day to respond to the scene of major incidents.

Washoe County Deputies conducted compliance checks of local establishments in the North Patrol District on February 22, 2010 and cited 5 of 6 businesses selling alcohol to a minor.
Deputies using an underage volunteer visited six businesses to determine if the establishment would sell alcoholic beverages to the juvenile. The businesses were located in the Sun Valley, Lemmon Valley and Spanish Springs areas. The establishments included 5 bars and 1 convenience store.
Staff at 1 of the 6 businesses asked for identification and declined the sale. At five of the bars and the convenience store the sale was completed and clerks were cited for non-compliance.
One bartender was on probation and the actions of selling to a minor violated the terms of probation. She was taken into custody.
In addition, Buckhorn’s and Stumpy’s Pub in Sun Valley received civil violations from the Department of Taxation for non-compliance with mandatory alcohol awareness training.
Juvenile drinking increases the possibility of traffic accidents, injuries and deaths, and these tragedies are preventable. Working in partnership with the community, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office will continue these efforts in the hopes that one day we have 100% compliance. This effort was funded by a grant from Join Together Northern Nevada.
