The Washoe County Sheriff's
Office is concerned with keeping the community informed about the
operation of the Sheriff's Office. One of the ways to accomplish
this is by regularly keeping the news media, and thereby the public,
informed of events involving the Sheriff's Office and its personnel.
The Public Information Officer (P.I.O.) coordinates this by acting
as a liaison between the Sheriff's Office and media representatives.
Duties include assisting reporters assigned to cover news stories
and providing them with general information at the scene of major
incidents. Our goal is to provide timely and factual information
to the community we serve.
The P.I.O.
is available 24 hours a day to respond to the scene of major incidents.

Washoe County Deputies who were assisting Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) attempting to remove a bear from a crawl space under a building in Incline were forced to shoot and kill the animal as it charged at one of the deputies.
This afternoon, at approximately 3:30 pm, Carl Lackey of NDOW was attempting to remove the 10 year old, 600 pound male bear which was located in the crawl space under a condominium building at 400 Fairview. Two bear dogs were deployed but alone were unsuccessful at removing the bear.
Lackey attempted to tranquilize the animal under the building but the bear charged at him. He then used bear spray and the dogs to get the animal out of the space. The bear came out and Lackey shot one tranquilizer dart into his shoulder.
Within seconds the bear charged at a deputy that was stationed nearby causing him to fall. The bear rushed over the deputy when he fired a shotgun round striking and killing the bear.
The animal was known to NDOW as a problem bear and they had made several attempts to capture this animal over the past few years because it was known to break in to residences.
